Granny would not have been tormented by the memory of George jilting her. She would let her feelings out and that way she would never have to wonder about why he left or what could have been. The effect would have been that the entire story would have been downsized. Either that or she would have pondered her family. It also would have changed the ending where the Granny reaches out and hopes for a sign from god, and yet again, "For a second time there was no sign. Again no bridegroom and the priest in the house" ( 5). You can see that the jilting dominates the story plot.
